As of September 2026, motor vehicles are restricted on it from August 14 for a culvert replacement at La Cueva Canyon. The work was expected to take about a month but could take longer. Cimarron Campground: set among spruce, aspen and fir, at the end of the Forest Service's wildflower-route directions: Forest Road 1950 for 10 miles past the Forest Road 1900 junction, then 1 mile up the hill on Forest Road 1910. Day use is $11 per vehicle. It sits inside the east-side closure from January 1 to April 1.; McCrystal Campground: about 36 miles northwest of Cimarron via US 64 and Forest Road 1950. An interpretive trail to a pioneer cabin at the Ring Place Ranch starts at the campground entrance. Day use is $14 per vehicle. It's also inside the east-side winter closure..
