Questions people ask
What do the dots mean?
Each dot is a place we track (for spring green-up, each state's center of population). A filled dot in a stage color is the latest official report; a ring is a place inside its usual window with no report yet; shaded dots show when a place usually starts, from its own sources. Nothing on the map is our own prediction.
Why is spring green-up shown by state?
It comes from the USA National Phenology Network's Spring Index, which models first leaf and first bloom from daily temperatures. We read it at each state's center of population and compare it with the 1991–2020 average.
